Onnagata (女形) are male actors who play female roles in kabuki theatre. Kabuki (歌舞伎) developed in the first years of the seventeenth century as a female-only drama (onna kabuki), often associated with prostitution. As a consequence, both its wildness and instant popularity led to legislation and legal constraints. In 1629 the Shogunate banned all women from performing in kabuki plays.
