About The Artwork

The checkered flag, synonymous with the thrilling finish line of vintage races, sets the pace for the captivating journey of checkered patterns in art.

Omnipresent in art and fashion, the checkered pattern traces its origins back centuries. In South India, before the 13th century, field workers adorned themselves with check-patterned 'lungis'. This culturally significant fabric was later mass-produced and exported due to Dutch colonization, eroding its cultural prominence.

Meanwhile, Scotland's tartans, dating back to the 3rd century, became symbols of family heritage. The British, post the Battle of Culloden, infamously banned tartans to suppress the Scots, ironically cementing their importance and standardizing them.

Different checkered patterns have, over time, resonated with various political, social, and cultural waves. British designer Vivienne Westwood turned tartans into punk culture icons, rebelling against their royal English status. Checkerboard patterns symbolized racial unity in the 1970s, espoused by the Ska music movement. This pattern further found allegiance with skate culture when Vans introduced their iconic checkerboard slip-on shoe.
