The first pressurized space suit worn by a human in space was the Soviet SK-1 suit worn by Yuri Gagarin in 1961, but it wasn't until 1971 that pressure suits were introduced for use during launch and re-entry, after the Soyuz 11 tragedy, in which all three unsuited cosmonauts died in a decompression accident.
BTW, did you know that NASA still uses the same EMU spacesuits that astronauts wore 40 years ago? Despite their age, these suits remain the only option for astronauts on Earth-orbiting missions. The cost of these puppies is substantial, originally reported to be between around $20 million. Today, that would be about $150 million. Unfortunately, NASA has not developed any new mission-ready spacesuits since then and is now facing a shortage.
