Zombie iPhone Case
About The Artwork
In Haitian folklore, a zombie is an animated corpse raised by magical means, such as witchcraft. These zombies are not just reanimated corpses but are deeply rooted in the cultural and spiritual beliefs of the region.
Central to this belief is the figure of the bokor, a sorcerer or witch who possesses the power to reanimate the dead through necromancy. These zombies are essentially slaves, devoid of free will and entirely under the bokor's control. In contrast, the houngan (priest) and mambo (priestess) of the formal Voodoo religion stand in opposition to the bokor's practices.
Beyond the physical zombie, Haitian folklore also speaks of the "zombie astral," a non-physical entity representing a part of the human soul. Bokors are said to capture these astral zombies to enhance their spiritual power. They can also trap a zombie astral in a decorated bottle, selling it to clients for luck, healing, or business success. However, this state is considered temporary, as it is believed that God will ultimately reclaim the zombie's soul.
This duality of zombies, physical and spiritual, mirrors the soul dualism concept prevalent in Bakongo religion and Haitian Voodoo. Both forms of zombies are seen as being incomplete, lacking one half of their soul – either the physical flesh or the spirit.
